HRD is the greasy spoon diner across the street from work that serves chinese and american diner fare. seriously, stepping in there is like stepping right into 1941. its run by an incredibly nice chinese family who work their asses off, seriously, the place is open 7 days a week and on holidays.
hrd is greasy, run down and time worn. and i see some interesting food choices there, by some people you wouldn't expect them from. take today for example.
there is a certain type of person you don't expect to see patronizing the HRD chinese-american cafe. today, at 11am, i was over there getting a turkey sandwich. it's good! they roast a whole turkey every day and slice off nice fresh slices and put it on a roll. so i was over there waiting. and i am looking out the window, watching my office across the street to make sure noone is ringing the bell and trying to get in. i see a woman walking down the sidewalk towards us. she's very well dressed, carrying some sort of sample books. young, maybe mid-thirties, tall and blonde. nice suit, nice shoes, nice handbag. she's on the big side, not fat, but tall and broad, i guess the term is "big-boned." but still, not someone you'd peg as an HRD customer. much to my surprise, she turns into HRD and ben, the dad/cook, greets her like a regular and says "grilled ham and cheese with egg, extra mayo?" she says "yes, and a side of mashed potatoes and gravy." that's a lot of greasy food to spoon down her gullet. and i'm not sure i'd try the HRD gravy.
