i promise not to make this a work blog, but i have to get a few complaints off my chest. my first complaint is that i have noone to complain to. eve is gone, tom is gone, kim is gone, mary is planning an event and is unapproachable at the moment, not to mention the fact that her complaints this week make mine pale in comparison. but here are a couple of pet peeves that both happened today at work:
#1: a printer is not working. someone tells me it is not working. i immediately try to fix it myself or get the IT guy to fix it. as i or he work on it, i HATE when people come by and say things along the lines of (and i am paraphrasing here): "finally, that printer hasn't been working for three days." just today, the IT guy, after fixing the printer, kindly went to everyone who had print jobs lined up in the Q (for some reason i can't spell that today) to ask them if he could delete them or if they still needed them. more than one person stated rather accusitorily that the printer has been broken "all week" so any print jobs have already been done on other printers. and they have a tone to their voice implying hardship and annoyance on their part and lazines or lack of concern on ours. IF YOU DON'T TELL ME SOMETHING IS NOT WORKING, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. if you had told me three days ago, it would have been fixed three days ago. man that bugs me.
my mantra at work: i am not a mindreader
#2: temperature control. this is somewhat related to the complaint above. if you are cold, just tell me. if you are hot, just tell me. i will adjust the thermostat. i hate when an envoy is sent my way in a coat and scarve, hugging themselves and shivering, to share some sob story about how everyone in their area has been absolutely freezing for hours, this is a true quote: "our teeth are literally chattering" is there anyway to turn off the cold air? actually, there is a way, its called a thermostat! i don't need an academy award performance to get up and adjust it. i don't understand what is behind this. it's one of two things, and both bug the crap out of me. first, they really have been sitting there shivering miserably for hours and its not even an act. what took you so long to ask? i'm very kind to these people, i'm not unapproachable, and i don't have a history of temperature torture. second, people think i won't believe them or act on their request unless they demonstrate the depravity of their condition. we used to have a russian woman in accounting who was the worst about this. you'd think someone from russia would have a higher tolerance for frigidity.
wow, i actually feel a lot better now.
